I stayed home from work this past Friday and actually was able to watch some day time TV. It felt good to just relax and have control of that TV Remote :). One of the shows I watched was the Montel Williams show. They were airing stories of those who are "Living a Nightmare: Autism and Tourette's". I've heard of both, but don't really know a whole lot about either.
I was extremely touched by one woman's story. Her name is Brie and she has such an extreme case of Tourette's that she is unable to live on her own. She lives like a prisoner because she gets so many looks and even name calling when she leaves her house. She cannot walk without assistance and has fallen many times. She can't cook and she can't do dishes because she has accidentally stabbed herself. This woman was so brave to come on the show. She has a good friend named Emily who has been there for her for 7 years now. It tears her up the way she sees people react when they see Brie. Many think she some kind of freak. I cannot tell you how much I cried during this episode. Brie is only 31 years old and cannot even enjoy the very basics that so many of us take for granted. Montel surprised her by letting her know she was going to be evaluated for a clinical trial of a revolutionary treatment for these severe cases of Tourette's. Even Montel shed tears as he was telling her what he is going to do for her. He even commented that she was going to be "his mission". The show's website has an address available if there is anyone that would like to contribute to Brie's medical fund. If you want to read more about the episode, click the following link. http://www.montelshow.com/show/detail/5243/
There's also links on their site to other sites where you can learn more about Autism and Tourette's.
I was extremely moved by Brie's courage for making the appearance on that show. And, I wasn't the only one crying... there were quite a few audience members tearing up as well.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I can't help but feel thankful for all that I have and all that I can do. I will continue to pray for those who struggle by no fault of their own.
